EAGLE ISLAND LIGHT - Maine

Location: East Penobscot Bay
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 23 feet
Year Established: 1838

Perched on the rocky northeast end of Eagle Island in East Penobscot Bay, Eagle Island Light has been guiding boats since the late 1830s. The lighthouse was originally lit in 1838 and then rebuilt in 1858. This granite tower stands about 23 feet tall, with its light just over 100 feet above the water. It was constructed to help lumber schooners and other vessels navigate toward Bangor and up the Penobscot River. The lighthouse was automated in 1959, and a keeper’s house and other outbuildings were removed in the 1960s amid local protest.

One quirky bit of history: the heavy fog bell intended for the station was dropped into the bay and later recovered by a local lobsterman. Today it remains an active aid to navigation and is cared for by a nonprofit group focused on its restoration. Eagle Island Light isn’t generally open to the public, but you can enjoy views from boats in the bay.
